What is Anderwijs?

At Anderwijs, we believe that good education should be accessible for everyone. That’s why we organize tutoring camps during school vacations. During these camps, children who attend secondary school (“middelbare school”; vmbo, havo, vwo) brush up on school subjects of their choice and enjoy social activities with the tutors and other participants. The tutors are volunteers who are usually either currently attending university or have recently graduated. The volunteers are members of our association and all possess a government-issued statement of conduct (“Verklaring Omtrent Gedrag”).

Every camp has a team of 4-8 volunteers (who are both the tutors and the camp organizers), and between 5 and 20 participants. We have camps for one weekend to one entire week (and anywhere in between, like 4 days). The camp organizers almost always pick a special theme for the camp and decorate the camp location (which is always a place with beds for everyone, no actual camping) accordingly. The main language on our camps (both during tutoring and outside of it) is Dutch.

What does an Anderwijs camp day look like?

Every morning we have breakfast together and enjoy our traditional oatmeal recipe for a healthy start of the day. The tutoring is done in small groups (max 3 participants per tutor), usually in slots of 1.5 hours (6 hours total every day). The small groups allow for lots of personal attention for the participant and his or her specific challenges with school work. Besides making homework we favor alternative methods of tutoring, for example playing a game of word memory, making a poster on the inner workings of the human body, or practicing statistics by gathering everyone’s shoe sizes.

During lunchtime there is room for everyone to relax, go outside, play a game or make music. After the afternoon tutoring it’s time for a common dinner. Cooking, dishes and other chores are done by groups of participants guided by a tutor. The evening usually features a bigger common game, like Live Stratego, glow stick football or an exciting quiz. We end every day by enjoying a nice cup of cocoa and discussing the day’s events.

What does an Anderwijs camp cost?

The camp price varies with duration, the full price ranging from roughly € 220 for a weekend (Friday evening to Sunday afternoon) to € 525 for an entire week (Sunday to Sunday). It’s also possible to get up to a 60% discount if your monthly income is below a certain threshold. For the discount you need to send an income statement to the treasurer. The exact prices per camp including different discount levels are on the (Dutch) agenda page.
